Leigh ABC Boxing News Season 2008/09

Prince Charlie ! (14th May 09)

Charlie Munro put in a dazzling performance on wednesday evening, appearing on the Runcorn ABC show opposite St Helens based Thomas Ludden of Sutton ABC. From the first bell the talented 12 year old Leigh boxer took the centre of the ring scoring with an array of venomous shots, and continued to both outbox and outpower his game opponent for the full three rounds.

Tom puts in Gallant performance in National Quarters (10th May 09)

Fifteen year old middleweight took on 2 time National champion Cory Gallant of Spennymore ABC in the Junior ABA National Quarter Finals at Everton Park on saturday, and in an absorbing contest just lost out on a points decision to his more experienced opponent. While undoubtedly the heavier pucher of the two, the Leigh boxer could never quite close down his slick North East based opponent. Tom next boxes on the Leigh ABC show on 29th May at Lowton Civic Hall.

Another improved performance from Josh (4th May 09)

Fourteen year old Josh Harrison appeared on the Irlam ABC show on sunday afternoon, and despite suffering a narrow points defeat, the Leigh featherweight's performance had plenty of positives to take into his next bout on 29th May on the upcoming Leigh show

Ben in cracker at Dockers Club (28th April 09)

Twelve year old bantamweight Ben Grimshaw had his second contest at Liverpool,s famous Dockers Club on Tuesday evening taking on Salisbury ABC's Jamie Davies, and despite losing on a points decision Ben showed great heart and plenty of skill which will see him do well in future bouts.

Jonny loses out in National Pre Quarter Finals (26th April 09)

Fifteen year old Jonny Brown, North West Region Junior ABA bantamweight champion, took on European champion Zak Smith in the National Pre Quarter Finals at Barrow on sunday afternoon, and despite a heroic all action performance lost out on points to the Towerhill ABC boxer. It was the second time this year that Jonny had been drawn with Smith, having lost out to him in the NACYP Championships, but the liverpudlian was given his sternest test so far by the Leigh boxer who can take great heart out of his performance.

Leigh ABC Show another sell-out success ! (7 March 09)

The 9th Leigh Amateur Boxing Club again proved a big hit with a capacity and bouyant crowd, with 12 Leigh boxers appearing in the 13 contests. Star shows from Michael Wilkinson, Marcus Glen, Jonny Brown and Charlie Munro were supported with great performances from the entire Leigh Team. With pro boxers Ensley Bingham and Adrian Gonzalez joining in the fun, the club and its army of supporters cant wait for the next show on Friday May 29th.

Jonny continues preparations for Championships (12 Jan 09)

Unbeaten Wigan ABC boxer Tom Rigby came to the Boxing & Fitness Centre on Monday evening to spar with Jonny Brown. Both boxers are preparing for upcoming Championship bouts,

Adam & Michael Win in Schoolboy Championships (10 Jan 08)

Adam Ridge and Michael Connor both recorded clear wins in their first ABA Championship bouts. Adam was paired with Droylsden ABC's Jack Eaton and proceeded to turn in his best performance so far in a Leigh ABC vest. Starting quickly Ridgey scored with fast combinations continually forcing the under presure Eaton on to the ropes. Taking a first round 5-0 lead Adam continued the onslaght, winning the next two rounds to take a unanimous 11-2 victory.
Michael Connor was opposite local rival Kieron Barlow of Centurions ABC and enhanced his growing reputation with a classy display of controlled boxing opposite a game pressure fighter. The result was never in doubt Michael's hand raised with a 10-2 unanimous points win. Adam next boxes in the Class 1 36kg Quarter Final at Rumworth Hall this Friday evening. Michael now boxes in the Class 2 52kg Final on Saturday afternoon in Manchester.

Leigh ABC boxers prepare for Championships in Wigan (30 Dec 08)

The eighth Leigh Amateur Boxing Show proved another great success on Friday evening at Lowton Civic Hall.
With eight Leigh boxers in the 12 bout bill, the sell-out crowd was again treated to an entertaining night of top class amateur boxing. Wins for Adam Ridge, Michael Connor, Ed Kirkham, Jonny Brown and Tom Jones an indication of the continued stream of talented boxers coming from the Leigh club.

Tom Wins on Debut ! (17 Oct 08)

Fifteen year old Leigh ABC boxer Tom Jones made a winning start to his boxing career with a dominant points win over Matthew Kerr of Ashton Albion ABC at Camelot. The heavy handed Leigh boxer was always in control, giving Kerr a third round standing count, who did well to survive to the final bell.

Jonny Wins Divisional Junior Novice Championship ! (9 Oct 08)

Fifteen year old Jonny Brown last night clinched the North West Region Junior Novice Class A 54kg ABA Championship at Greenlands, Preston. Facing a very strong opponent in Mottram & Hattersley's unbeaten Ben Latham, Jonny set a blistering pace from the first bell using great footwork and head movement to blast in powerfull hooks and body shots. To his credit though, Latham responded with sharp jabs and backhands, though the Leigh boxer avoided most with a solid defence. In a cracking contest Jonny's workrate and cleaner shots caught the judges eyes to give him a deserved first ABA title.
