Team Leigh Boxing News Season 2007/08

Rob On Fire in Moss Side ! (1 June 08)

Rob Bordon

Two Leigh ABC boxers, Adam Ridge and Robert Bordon appeared on the excellent Moss Side Fire Station Show on Saturday afternoon.
Both boxers were matched with opponents from Egans Boxing Academy, first up being 12 year old Adam Ridge opposite Connor Burke. In a very close contest, Adam lost on a majority decision despite having a dominant third round. Light heavyweight Rob Bordon was taking on Kyle De Banks, who boasted nine wins from his previous fourteen contests. Rob though controlled the bout throughout with snappy jabs and heavy backhands to take a desrved points victory.

Mikey makes his St Helens debut (30 May 08)

Michael Evans, unbeaten pro Martin Murray and Luke Steventon (blue)

Michael Evans made his debut on the Sutton ABC show at St Helens Town Hall on Thursday evening, taking on Newbury & Farnworth ABC's Luke Steventon. In an entertaining bout both youngsters displayed plenty of heart along with excellent boxing skills to the delight of an appreciative crowd. Losing on points, Michael will continue to improve and the coaches see a bright future for the Westleigh High School prospect.

Jordan boxes in the Steel City (27 May 08)

Jordan Alexander

Fourteen year old welterweight Jordan Alexander was in the ring opposite JJ's ABC Kydi O'Borg who had won his last four bouts. Jordan though is now beginning to realise his undoubted potential and for three rounds boxed and punched his way to a clear unanimous victory. What made the win all the more creditable was the fact that Jordan cracked a bone in his right hand early in the second round, never mentioned it, and showed great strength of character to see out the bout. Both Kelton and Jordan were commended by the Yorkshire officials for their boxing abilities.

Ridgey Gets Revenge ! (sat 10 May 08)

Adam Ridge and Robert Bordon both put in terrific performances on the Lancaster Boys ABC show on friday evening.
"Ridgey" was taking on the home club's Niall Fielding, to whom he had dropped a majority decision loss earlier in the season. This time though after a tentative start, Adam took control of the contest, scoring with heavy blows and fast combinations. A dominant third round sealed a unanimous points victory.
Light Heavyweight Robert Bordon was quickly back in action taking on reigning ELCCIOM Novice light heavyweight Champion Jonathan Birch of Lancaster Boys ABC. In an enthralling contest, the shorter busy Birch marched forward with heavy hooks to body and head, but blocking well Robert replied with fast jabs and right hands. With Birch taking the opening round, Rob then evened things up taking the second, and after a toe to toe slugfest third it all went to the judges scorecards, with a majority win going to Birch.
Robert and Adam are next in action on the giant open air show in Manchester on saturday afternoon on May 31st

Another busy week for Leigh boxers (28 April 08)

Leigh Amateur Boxing Club had a mixed week of results, taking in bouts in Yorkshire, the Midlands, Liverpool and Preston.
In Stoke, 19 year old light heavyweight, Robert Bordon, put in a great display against the experienced 26 year old Gareth Millington of Shotton ABC, before narrowly losing a majority decision. In the Junior ABA Championships, welterweight David Morris looked stangely lethargic in dropping a majority decision to Larches Scott Fitzgerald.
Appearing on the Halifax ABC show light welterweight Peter Prescott made his debut, and despite improving with every round lost on points to the unorthodox Mohammed Awais of the home club. In the bout of the night, welterweight Ryan Lewis lost a controversial majority points decision to Halifax' Matthew Wheeler.
Good news finally arrived for the Leigh club with an outstanding performance by 14 year old welterweight Jordan Alexander on the Gemini ABC show in Liverpool on sunday. Facing the more experienced and taller opponent Paul Culverwell of Earl Shilton ABC, Jordan continually forced the pace, scoring with thunderous blows to head and body. The referee calling a halt to the action in the third after giving the Leicester based boxer two standing counts. Following this, 11 year old Adam Ridge also won by stoppage over Colin Pye of Transport ABC.
Finally 12 year old Michael Connor lost a majority points decision to Liam Corness of St Aloysius ABC in Liverpool.
They can't all win !

Ryan & Michael Win in Blackburn (18 April 08)

Michael & Ryan with winners trophies

Leigh Amateur Boxing Club had a successful evening on Friday at the Audley Police ABC Show in Blackburn. First up was 12 year old light flyweight, Michael Connor who continued his winning run with a power packed performance in outpointing Ashton Albion's George Holland. Forcing the action from the first bell, the Leigh boxer worked to body and head to take a unanimous points win.
Next up was 19 year old welterweight Ryan Lewis who recorded his third straight stoppage in a row opposite the home club's Bilal Shoth. In a wildly exciting bout both boxers stood toe to toe blasting away for two rounds, but in the third Lewis' extra power began to tell, and after taking a barrage of heavy shots, Shoth was rescued by his corner. Ryan next appears on the Lancaster Boys ABC show on May 9th, while Michael boxes in Liverpool next saturday

Busy time for Leigh boxers (31 March 08)

Appearing at the Bolton Elite ABC Show were Leigh's 12 year olds Chris King who lost on points to Abdul Roshid of Hamer ABC and debutant Sean Kenny who lost out on points to Sean Hughes of Roche ABC
Other Leigh ABC boxers in action over the past week with Ryan Lewis having a stoppage victory over Andy Cockerill of Charnwood ABC in Stoke, while Paul Harris lost to Aram Adjogate of Stoke ABC.
At the weekend three members of Leigh ABC travelled to the Isle of Man as part of the East Lancs Divisional Squad. Eleven year old Adam Ridge unluckily lost by majority decision to Manx boxer Niall Fielding and was accompanied by East Lancs Head Coach Adrian Fleming.

Great Show at Lowton (2 Mar 08)

Leigh Amateur Boxing Club had seven local boxers appearing on a 13 bout bill at the latest sell-out show at Lowton Civic Hall on Friday evening.
Opening the show and making his debut, 12 year old light flyweight Chris King of Westleigh High School gave an all action performance in beating Crewe ABC’s Sam Rogerson.
Another Westleigh High School representative next entered the ring in 12 year old lighy flyweight Michael Connor. Matched with Danny Longworth of Newbury & Farnworth ABC, Michael dominated from the first bell, taking every round on the way to a unanimous points win.
Bantamweight Ed Kirkham, of St Aldreds High School Newton, put in a gutsy display constantly taking the action to his bigger opponent, Alex Hyland of Vauxhall Motors ABC. It was never quite enough though, Ed losing on points.
Lowton High School light flyweight, 14 year old Jonathan Brown, continued his recent good form with a comprehensive points win over a much more experienced Alistair Elder of Sefton ABC.
In one of the most exciting bouts of the evening, Bedford School welterweight Hafeez Samad, showed real inner strength in overcoming an early count and heavy pressure to almost turn the result around in his bout with Aaron Edwards of Pioneer Community ABC. After going behind in the first two rounds, Hafeeze made an astonishing final round surge, and scoring with very heavy right hands, it was only the final bell that saved the exhausted and battered Edwards. A points loss but a moral victory for Hafeeze.
The experience of Ashley Peyton proved far too much for Centurions ABC’s Craig Boardman, the Leigh boxer dominating throughout to take a clear points win.
Penultimate Leigh boxer to appear saw the exciting debut of 19 year old light middleweight Ryan Lewis. In a blistering display of speed and power, Ryan blasted through Jamie Wroe of Salford ’s Broughton ABC, the referee rescuing Wroe early in the second round.

Michael Rules the Roost in Dovecot (16 Feb 08)

Michael with his Winners Trophy

Boxing in Liverpool for the first time, 12 year old light flyweight Michael Connor was matched on the Dovecot ABC Show opposite the home club's Sean Coulter. In an amazing setting, the club being an old converted theatre, the bout was second on the bill. As the first bell rang, southpaw Coulter took the action straight to the Leigh boxer, but showing great footwork Connor evaded the heavy looking blows and scored with neat straight shots. Now getting into his stride, Michael turned up the pressure reigning shots from all angles onto the retreating Liverpudlian. A powerful right hand caught Coulter forcing the referee to give an eight count as the bell sounded for the end of the first. Now showing great composure, the Leigh boxer mixed his shots, continually catching the home boxer and after administering two more counts to the overwhelmed Coulter, the referee stopped the action midway into the second round. A cool, clinical performance from the Leigh youngster.

Leigh ABC had Michael Connor appearing on the Skerton ABC show on Friday. Unbelievably 12 year old Michael was on 10th opposite John Stewart of Skerton ABC and after a slow start the Leigh youngster finally began to display his undoubted skills. Unfortunately Michael just lost out on a majority points decision.
