Young people stay on right track through boxing (7 Oct 09)

Police in West Leigh are encouraging young people to get in the boxing ring and off the streets.

The scheme, which takes place at Leigh Amateur Boxing Club on Scott Street in Leigh, is part of the X-Zones initiative run by Wigan Council.

This aims to get young people across the borough involved in positive activities as a way of reducing anti-social behaviour and keeping them fighting fit.

PC Andy Doran of the Leigh West Neighbourhood Policing Team (NPT) said: “This is a fantastic way for young people to get involved in sport and learn self-discipline. Those that run the boxing club are committed to working with them and offer a fantastic service to the community. I would encourage people to come down and get involved.”

Adrian Fleming, head coach at Leigh Amateur Boxing Club, added: “We are only too happy to help get young people into sport to keep them on the right track in life, and I would encourage anyone interested to come along to one of our sessions.”

Training sessions (£1.50 for under 16s):
· Junior class for 8-14s: Monday to Thursday from 5pm to 6pm
· Senior class for 14yrs and over: Monday to Thursday from 6pm to 7.30pm
· Class for juniors and seniors: Saturday mornings from 10.30am to 12 noon

* There is also a free training session on Friday nights for those young people referred to the club as part of the X-Zones scheme.

Leigh ABC boxers get advice from Top Sports Nutritionist Kerry Kayes (22 Sept 09)

Leigh ABC boxers Jonny Brown, Michael Connor and Tom Jones accompanied Head Coach Adrian Fleming to CNP Sports Nutrition headquarters in Manchester for a personal 3 hour session with top Nutritionist Kerry Kayes. The boxers joined Kerry as he put European Champion Jamie Moore through an eye opening weights session, before returning to the boardroom where Kerry advised the boys on sports specific weight training for boxers and nutrition both for boxing and general health. Leigh ABC would like to thank Kerry for giving the lads his valuable time (he rushed back from Warrington where he had been working with UFC Superstar Michael Bisping to meet the boxers) along with Jamie Moore who was only too happy to pass on advice to the young boxers.
