Westleigh High School : Boxing - Duke of Edinburgh Award

Westleigh High School Students Learn the Ropes (16 Nov 08)

Fifteen students from Westleigh High School are taking part in a twelve week Boxing & Fitness Course as part of their Duke of Edinburgh Award. The boys and girls train at the Boxing & Fitness Centre every Friday morning under the guidance of Leigh ABC Coaches, and will be striving to pass the Bronze, Silver & Gold Awards in Amateur Boxing.

In December, Leigh ABC President and the Secretary for Culture & Sport Andy Burnham, MP for Leigh, came along to watch the students in action and then chatted with them about their future plans. Andy said “I have taken a keen interest in Leigh Amateur Boxing Club since I first visited their Leigh home in 2002.
“There is a strong tradition of boxing in the North West, and it was a real pleasure to be able to look round the Club’s new facilities and to see first hand the excellent work being done with our young people. I am sure that the Club will continue to build on its successes in the years to come.”
"I am a great believer that boxing can provide some young people with a real sense of focus and personal discipline. I was interested to see the work that the club is doing with local schools and will continue to support them in any way I can"
