Team Leigh Boxing Show 30th November 07
Chris on his way to the ring
The sixth Leigh Amateur Boxing Club Show was held on Friday evening at Lowton Civic Hall, once again to a sell-out crowd. Fifteen bouts took place, fourteen going to points decision, with nine Leigh boxers representing the town.
12 year old Chris King of Westleigh High School made his debut in a skills bout opposite Kildare Ward of Darnhill ABC. Following this 12 year old Michael Connor also of Westleigh High School stepped into the ring for the first time, taking on Sam Rogerson of Crewe ABC. In a dominant performance Michaels handspeed and footwork proved too much for the more experienced Rogerson, the Leigh boxer taking a unanimous points victory.
Next up for Leigh was another debutant in 14 year old bantamweight, Ed Kirkham of St Aldreds High School, Newton. Matched with Elliot Larsen of Macclesfield ABC, Ed immediately took the action to his well schooled opponent, picking his shots well and taking a first round lead. The second round saw Larsen box his way back into the bout, but in the final round Ed once again picked up the pace, scoring to head and body to take a points win.
Fourteen year old flyweight Jonathan Brown of Lowton High School was paired with the experienced and very tall Jon Thomson of Macclesfield ABC. As always Jonathans high tempo workrate saw him continually force his opponent backwards, but to Thomsons credit he picked his punches well, and the visiting boxer took a narrow majority points decision.
Following this 14 year old welterweight Jordan Alexander of St Aldreds High School, worked hard to close down the taller, elusive Dean Weaver of Crewe ABC, but tired in the final round. Weaver edging a points win.
Fifteen year old welterweight Hafeez Samad of St Marys High School made his debut against Saquib Querishi of Darnhill ABC. Despite Hafeez being the more aggressive boxer in the bout, the equally tall Querishi displayed nice shot selection to take a points win.
The penultimate Leigh ABC boxer to appear was 18 year old light welterweight Ashley Peyton. Matched with the wild swinging Scott Rice of Dynamics ABC, Ashley took two blatant low blows, and despite appeals to the referee no action was taken. The corner having no option but to retire Ashley.
Bantamweight Martin Pilkington was the final Leigh boxer to enter the ring, taking on Liam Hanrahan of Macclesfield ABC. Hanrahan a 2007 National Finalist, was a stiff test for the Bickershaw based boxer, but after four brutal rounds, in which both boxers continually stood toe to toe, Martin just lost out on a points decision.
The next Leigh ABC Show is on Friday 29th February 2008 and bookings are already being taken.
